After explaining the negative effects of planting trees too deep in the soil and mulching too high (notice the soil line on the trunk), we decided that a root collar excavation was the best approach. We used an air-spade to remove the soil around the trunk. Air-spades excavate with the use of air in order to expose the root collar without the damage that can occur using typical hand tools. We removed all of the girdling roots that we found and this tree will live a healthier life because of it.
